What is projection mapping and how can it be used at your next exhibition or trade show.
Projection mapping, also known as video mapping and spatial augmented reality, is a projection technology that is used to turn objects into display surfaces for video projection. The software can interact with a projector to fit any desired image onto the surface of that object.
This technology has been used for a variety of different events and shows, most recently used companies such as Heineken and The O2 Arena during the Rugby World Cup hosted in the United Kingdom
The reason that this technology hadn’t made its way into more avenues was due to it being confined to night time and being exclusively used in large one-off installations for events. First issue was that it was confined to night time because there projections were interfered with by the suns own light rays. After some development in this filed these projections now have a powerful enough light that the images no longer get distorted and can be used during the day. The size of the projectors needed has also been decrease which means that this technology can be used by smaller event and exhibition displays and retail companies. With these issues now solved, it has broadened the possible applications for projection mapping hugely.
We look at how this technology could be used within the exhibition and trade show industry.
With projection mapping you have the opportunity to create 2D or 3D images when can then be projected onto a variety of surfaces without having to print often expensive graphics. It also means that the branding/ logos can be changed more easily than if they were printed. It also means that you can easily transform your designated space at the exhibition or trade show into any theme you want.
PRODUCT AND COMPANY VIDEOS
This technology allows for a variety of product demonstration videos to be created and projected onto wall and stand surfaces. This will allow you to decrease the amount of products that you have at the event, saving money on shipping, travel and saving space. These videos allow you to be more creative with how you present your products and brand to attendees.
Projection mapping also allows for the ultimate product launches. Creating elaborate and unique 2D or 3D clips that can enhance the products being launched. Creating informative content that accompanies the product is also a possibility. Having product specifications and details that are projected directly onto the display surface give the product launch a different and edgy factor.
Interactive videos or games can draw attendees to your stand and keep them there for a longer period of time. This allows for your skilled sales staff to approach them and have meaningful interactions with them about your product ranges.
This type of technology is only going to get better and better with more innovations and features that will allow exhibitors and display designers to create more elaborate and diverse designs for their next exhibitions and trade shows.
